Across industries and age ranges, women in corporate America are largely excluded from important discussions and decisions, especially at the management and executive level.But theres one club dominated by men that actually serves to break down the cultures and structures that tend to favor men. The 30% Club, originally launched in the U.K. by Helen Morrissey, is made up of (mostly) men who are all about creating a mora gender-balanced workforce by getting more women on boards. Companies need to accept greater responsibility for building more diverse workplaces and that responsibility starts at the top.Why is this initiative whose long term objective is to improve womens experiences largely dr iven by men? Because the majority of the time, men are in the drivers seat, and theres no way that will change unless a large chunk of those men are advocating for change. In fact, Fairygodboss recently convened a summit on how to make womens resource groups more effective and one of the key takeaways welches that its crucial to get the stab und sttze of male and executive allies. The 30% Club is doing just that. Its mission is to develop a diverse pool of talent for all businesses through the efforts of its Chair and CEO members who are committed to better gender balance at all levels of their organizations. Business leadership is key to our mission, taking the issue beyond a specialist diversity effort and into mainstream talent management.In a recent conversation with Fairygodboss, Kiersten Barnet, Grauers Deputy Chief of Staff at Bloomberg, explained why Morrissey created the group in the first place. Based on her own experiences as a woman and a mother of nine who was on the p ath to being a CEO, Morrissey looked around and said shed love to see more women in senior leadership positions, at the top, boardroom level and thought hopefully that would trickle down. Morrisseys goal was to get 30% of women on FTSE-100 boards by 2020, and she wanted people on those boards to lead that effort. I think that in the U.K., having those male leaders voluntarily leading the effort and lending their voice to drive this change helped change the conversation there, emphasizing that this was a talent management imperative, Barnet said.Grauer decided to launch the club in the U.S. after he and Barnet were speaking with Morrissey in 2014. Barnet recalled that they were discussing the fact that everybody does seem to understand the business case for gender diversity in the boardroom and at the top but we could use a community to get there.And thats precisely what the 30% Club is a community of senior business leaders with the same overarching goal, who regularly meet and ta lk to discuss their experiences, best practices, and even their failures. When the club launched in the U.S. three years ago, it had 25 founding members among them Warren Buffett and Sheryl Sandberg and today, there nearly 70 leaders in the group. Grauer and the other founding members decided sought membership from chairs and CEOs with a variety of boards including those whose companys board is already 30% (or more) women. Macys and Estee Lauder, for instance, have already achieved parity at board level, while other members have just one or two women on their boards. Offering that network has been really helpful, Barnet said.In the U.S., the group has two meetings per year that are just for members, and throughout the year they facilitate other events and initiatives including a Future Female Directors program and a mentoring program that focuses on mid-career level women. In addition to increasing the number of women on boards, club members also have the opportunity to nominate women who they think should be sitting on public company boards.Barnet said that while she hasnt seen much pushback on the clubs ideals, it can certainly be a challenge to get more women into the room because some people have boards where directors have been sitting for ten or 15 years. Moreover, she says, some club members have expressed frustration because there are no term limits for board members in the U.S., so theres no natural mechanism worked in for turnover. Some boards have been hiring third parties to do an evaluation process, and thats been helpful, she said. The good news is our members are thinking more broadly about what makes good corporate governance today. The challenges are greater, the need to move quickly is greater, and they want to make sure they have the right skills in their boardrooms.Of course, part of the 30% Clubs work involves tracking its progress and theres no doubt that their efforts are paying off. When the club was established in the U.S. in 2014 , members had an average of 21.7% women on their boards. Today, that numbers up to 29%.

Takea breakfrom trying to fit in those last 316 steps and find out.Where did that 10,000 come from?The reason that number is so unusually round is because it isnt the result of a health study it came from a marketing teamInspired bythe 1964 Tokyo Olympics, a Japanese compan y released a pedometer called manpo-kei, which translates to 10,000 step meter. As we can see, they did their job exceptionally well, to the point that its overtaken other exercise metrics in many peoples minds.Dr. Matthew Mintz, MD, FACP, an internal medicine practitioner in Bethesda, MD, points out, There is actually no recommended daily step count from a medical standpoint. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) insteadrecommendsthat adults engage in 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, which can include brisk walking. Lets say you spread that over five days, youd need to walk 1.5 miles, or 3,000 steps, at a pace of 3mph for 30 minutes to meet the CDC goal, in addition to any slower steps you take when youre just moving around at home or at work.Regardless of the origins, scientists studying the benefits of walking since then have often used 10,000 steps as a baseline. For instance,a studypublished in 2000 in the journalHypertension Researchfound that when peopl e with mild cases of hypertension started walking at least 10,000 steps a day for 12 weeks, their blood pressure and overall ability to exercise both improved. In addition, health professionals identify a 10,000-step daily target as an achievable number when encouraging people to factor more exercise into their lives.Dr. Susan Besser, MD, a family medicine practitioner in Baltimore, MD, explains, The studies suggest 10,000 steps is a good number, and its certainly easy to remember. Counting steps is probably the easiest metric, since most people have a step counter on their smartphone.Why focus on walking?Its 6 pm, you havedinner plans, and your fitness tracker has only recorded 2,000 steps for the day, leaving you wondering Is walking really that good for us? Yes it is, according to Besser, who explains that there are many benefits that make it worthwhile. Plus, unlike many forms ofexercise, for most people walking doesnt require expensive gym memberships, specialequipment, or additional training.Are 10,000 steps enough?More recent studies, however, have suggested that that 10,000 goal might actually be too low if we want the maximum health benefits.A studypublished in theInternational Journal of Obesityin 2017 found that Glasgow postal workers who walked over 15,000 steps a day were healthier than those who were sedentary and showed no signs ofmetabolic syndrome(a term that covers a group of risk factors, including high blood pressure and high blood sugar, that increase your risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes). In addition, Mintz highlights research based on the lifestyle of the Amish Many Amish people give up modern conveniences suc h as cars so they tend to walk more, he explains. A study in 2004showed that Amish men walked over 18,000 steps a day, and only 25 percent were overweight, and none were obese.Er, thats great, but what about those of us whose jobs and lifestyles dont easily accommodate walking vast distances every day? Mintz recommends aiming for somewhere between 8,000 and 14,000 steps - which makes 10,000 a pretty good number. He admits that this goal tends to be challenging for most people, but any increase in your step count and daily activity is going toimprove your health.Make it work for youAs with anyfitness goal, your ideal step count should be personalized to suit what you can do. Just because your colleague has run threemarathonsdoesnt mean you have to, and just because your sister is doing 12,000 steps a day with her husky puppy doesnt mean you have to match her.Dr. Luiza Petre, MD, New York City-based cardiologist and weight management specialist, advises, We should set goals on an ind ividual basis, with the aim of achieving and then surpassing them. There is no magic number or limit, although more steps is always better. Instead of just counting steps, we should strive to include a variety of activities in our daily routine and set our own personal goals for growth. Speaking of variety, if you dont want to walk or cant, Petre suggests swimming laps, taking pool aerobic classes, orcyclingas alternatives that raise your heart rate andstrengthen your corewhile putting less strain on joints.Instead of letting yourfitness devicecontrol your life, take those 10,000 steps as a suggestion rather than a rule, adding and subtracting a little until you get to a goal thats going to motivate you to be as active as you can without letting it become an obsession. Speaking from her own experience, Besser says, I like walking and I try to get 7,000 to 10,000 steps daily, but the amount depends on whats going on that day. My advice is dont get frustrated or angry if you cant make your goal - whatever it is - every single day.
